Sports Massage
Sports massage combines brisk circulatory work with site specific deep tissue work. This type of massage addresses the needs of athletes and contains components of Swedish massage, cross-fiber friction massage (to treat adhesions), deep compression massage (to release fascial tissue) and trigger point therapy. Clients typically schedule both during training periods as well as pre- and post-event to enhance performance and promote healing and recovery. This work is recommended for both professional and amateur athletes as part of a complete fitness program which may also include work with a personal trainer, physical therapist or sports medicine specialist.
Brisk circulatory work facilitates clearing of metabolic waste from connective tissue (muscle, tendons, ligaments & fascia) post-event and during training. Deep tissue massage is performed with a light touch slowly and carefully rather than aggressively to minimize pain & discomfort for the client. This should not be confused with 'deep pressure' massage, which is performed with sustained, occasionally intense pressure throughout an entire full-body session and does not address a specific complaint.
Although circulatory massage is helpful post-event, it is recommended that athletes postpone deep tissue work until they are more fully physically recovered (3-5 days).
